And as a society, we underpay—and under care for—the very workers we rely on to provide health and care services to others.
They create a suite of environmental problems: from high carbon emissions as trees and soils burn; to public health emergencies when wildfires hit towns and smoke affects distant cities; to water contamination compounding regional drought. Modern land management practices such as fire suppression and logging make forests likelier to burn.
These workers are often forced to choose between risking their health or their income, especially as climate change only increases the likelihood of wildfires, which in turn drives up the number of airborne toxins. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), pollution can also increase the risk of respiratory infection and lung cancer.
