A great session I went to was on managing development staff by Betsy Rigby, Director of Development with Partners HealthCare. How assumptions affect our managing. In the 1960’s, MIT researchers came up with two theories of management, ingloriously named, Theory X and Theory Y. Theory X and Theory Y.

It was immediately apparent that there was the need for the board to conduct a thorough, investigative audit of the organization, so they hired a firm specializing in financial malfeasance and organizational development. While the board was informed of the changes, it did not manage the details of this process.

It’s a big job, serving as a development officer. Bigger than far too many development officers (or their bosses and boards) think.
