By Darren Isom , Cora Daniels & Lyell Sakaue Each summer on Martha’s Vineyard, leaders of color working in philanthropy across the United States gather to strategize, to vision, and to be in community with one another on an island where Black families have been vacationing since the 1800s.
For example, only a handful of the nearly 200 US Giving Pledge signatories have giving organizations (foundations or otherwise) with more than 50 staff. They also tend to make smaller grants than other types of collaboratives and report significant challenges fundraising, especially among high-net-worth (HNW) donors.
Yet, philanthropy endures. Philanthropy will no longer remain confined to a wealthy elite but will transform into a shared, lived experience for people across the economic spectrum. This will be about laying a foundation, beginning in childhood, that makes giving as instinctual as it is rewarding.
