Year-end fundraising season is here and it’s the busiest time of the year for most nonprofit organizations. You need to plan carefully. If you just send one fundraising letter and wait for the donations to pour in, you’re chasing rainbows. Your donors are busy and may put your letter aside to handle later, and never get to it. You may be thinking of not using direct mail at all because it’s too expensive, and only sending email appeals.

Katelyn Baughan created an automated welcome series for The Children’s Inn at NIH that nurtured new donors over time instead of throwing them into regular email marketing. Today, Katelyn shares how the new welcome series fit into their revamped email marketing strategy, how it was implemented, and its results. ~ Kristina.
As we head into the fourth quarter of 2018, one can’t help but to look back at what a year it was! Let’s reflect: It was only a little over a year ago that Hurricane Harvey slammed the Texas coast inflicting a record-setting $125 billion in damage to the area. It was exactly 12 months ago that the #MeToo Movement gained global attention, following sexual misconduct allegations against Harvey Weinstein , in response to the widespread prevalence of sexual assault and harassment in the workplace.
7,106 people worldwide participated in the survey for the 2018 Global Trends in Giving Report. Of those, 1,049 responded that they had not given to charity within the last 12 months. Here are six reasons why: 1) 43% responded that they do not give to charity because they do not have the financial resources. 2) 20% volunteer in lieu of making donations. 3) 17% donate goods and/or services in lieu of making a donation. 4) 12% don’t trust organizations to spend their money well. 5) 6% prefer to
Traditional budgeting and forecasting methods can no longer keep pace with today’s rapidly evolving business environment. Static budgets, rigid annual forecasts, and outdated financial models limit an organization’s ability to adapt to market shifts and economic uncertainty. To stay ahead, finance leaders must leverage a future-forward approach—one that leverages real-time data, predictive analytics, and continuous planning to drive smarter financial decisions.
Capital campaigns are a mainstay in nonprofit fundraising. There's something special about a time-limited, specific goal like a capital campaign. It gets us motivated to give generously and accomplishes results we can see and touch. But things are changing. For starters, in our smartphone saturated world we have many more options to connect with donors.
Does the protagonist of your story know what she’s getting into—how you’ll use her story, and the risks are of sharing it? Probably not, if you’re like most communicators. Let’s change that. Organizations like ours—that share stories regularly to activate our people—wield power and influence. When a protagonist lends us her story to share, she opens herself up to curiosity, criticism, misunderstanding, and sometimes even physical harm.
One of your year-end fundraising goals may be to get new donors. That’s fine, but a better goal is to keep these donors. The retention rate for new donors is a dismal 23%. Put simply, over ¾’s of your new donors won’t donate again. There are many reason donors don’t give a second gift – some you can control, some you can’t. One of the biggest reasons is poor or nonexistent donor communication.

Let’s start with a cartoon in honor of Halloween: <SHUDDERS> Yesterday, I shared a few things that scare me and what I am doing about it. I also encouraged you to share what scares you too. Would “bad grammar” make your list? I didn’t include it on my list because I am actually trying to let go of the “grammar nerd” in me.
For all of #GivingTuesday’s success, it’s lagged in one key area: corporate partnerships. Nonprofits have used #GivingTuesday to leverage and deepen their relationships with individuals. This is no small feat, but now nonprofits need to do the same with companies, as adding cause marketing campaigns will unlock even more individual gifts. One reason nonprofits haven’t tackled corporate partnerships for #GivingTuesday is that no one has showed them how to do it!

Nonprofits love Canva for creating quick, good-looking graphics. Don’t you wish there was something just as quick and easy for video? I know I do. I thought there had to be something much easier by now, so I googled “Canva for video” and sure enough, one company is trying to market themselves in that way: Typito.
I think we can all agree that it's been one heck of a year! Massive hurricanes, the #MeToo movement, celebrity suicides, school shootings. Crazy, right? ?? So many organizations I follow or work with have become strong and savvy communicators. It’s thrilling to see nonprofits like yours put communications to work effectively despite time, talent, and budget constraints. . In today’s workplace, the true ROI of recognition lies in its ability to regenerate tangible, business-driven results.
Best Buddies International. Like many of you, I’ve been working with storytelling for more than a decade now. And, like many of you, I know we need to do it better. Stories that are all about us, don’t have relevance to our supporters, or don’t map to our organizational identity.

Every election season is a barrier to connection, with people overwhelmed by 24/7 messages from multiple campaigns via multiple channels. But connecting this fall—through the noise of so many contentious midterm elections—is particularly tough. That’s a real concern as we plunge into Giving Tuesday and Year-End.
