One of the beautiful things about a short annual report (think 2-4 pager, infographic or video) is that you don’t have to spend nearly as much time creating the thing. But there is a catch. . . You have to spend more time planning it. That’s because it’s a lot harder to create something short, where you have to make strategic decisions about what to leave out, than it is to just throw everything into the document.
Are you a digital or social marketer wanting to progress in your business and marketing career? Do you find yourself getting stuck, getting passed over for promotions? I’m sure you’ve been to a party and ended up stuck in a conversation with someone who talks too much about himself or brags about all the wonderful things she’s done. It’s exacerbating and you can’t get away fast enough. Imagine your donors having the same reaction when all your communications sound like one big bragfest that have nothing to do with them.
Based upon the survey results of 4,084 donors worldwide, the 2017 Global Trends in Giving Report is an annual research project that examines how donors prefer to give and engage with their favorite causes and charitable organizations. Sponsored by the Public Interest Registry and researched by Nonprofit Tech for Good, the report summarizes donor data across six continents about how online and mobile technology effects giving.

The $1.35 million raised will be used to help send kids with muscular dystrophy to MDA Summer Camp.
Like it or dislike it #GivingTuesday is almost over for another year. I say “almost” for two reasons. First, I’m writing this at 6:45pm EST Tuesday, so there’s still a few hours to go. Second, for purposes of improving 2018’s results there are some learnings from this year’s event. As I write, #GivingTuesday claims to have raised online $177 million from 1.6 million donors in 98 countries around the globe.

Would you like to achieve more ROI from your Facebook advertising and Facebook boosted posts? Do you see that cute little Facebook “boost post” button but don't really know how to optimize it? If you answer yes to this question then you have arrived at the right place. The truth is that although the Facebook boosted post advertising option is very easy to use and may often seem easier than other Facebook advertising options, there are clear scenarios where it may be worth your time t
Thanksgiving is coming up and it’s a time of year in the U.S. when we show gratitude to the special people in our lives. Do you extend this same gratitude to your donors? Sometimes it doesn’t seem that way. Nonprofit organizations tend to treat thanking their donors as an afterthought. But you need to spend just as much time thanking your donors as you do on fundraising.
Smart speakers are voice-activated digital assistants that enable users to use their voice to command a wide variety of activities, such as play music, listen to news, make calls, watch video clips, shop online, and control smart home devices (thermostats, home alarm systems, lights, smart TVs, etc.). Amazon Alexa is the digital assistant software that empowers Amazon’s smart speaker series, the Amazon Echo.

The campaign included a pledge from Nesquik to match every $10 donation made to the foundation on Movember's 10th birthday. On the show, Megan, Melanie and I discuss: Melanie Zachar, Nestle/Nesquick.
Traditional budgeting and forecasting methods can no longer keep pace with today’s rapidly evolving business environment. Static budgets, rigid annual forecasts, and outdated financial models limit an organization’s ability to adapt to market shifts and economic uncertainty. To stay ahead, finance leaders must leverage a future-forward approach—one that leverages real-time data, predictive analytics, and continuous planning to drive smarter financial decisions.
Branding is vital to your nonprofit’s success. It’s what people think about when they think of your organization. It impacts everything including your ability to recruit board members and raise money. Consider this: When people think about making a charitable gift, they often think of the familiar, more well-known, well-publicized nonprofits. Think of the multi-million bequest left to a local hospital or university by a donor that never made a previous gift.
In just a couple of weeks, my new book, CALM not BUSY: How to Manage Your Nonprofit’s Communications for Great Results will be released. What’s equally exciting to me personally is that it will be the first title released by a new publishing company I am launching with my friend and business partner, Antionette Kerr. Bold and Bright Media will release CALM not BUSY as well as Modern Media Relations , a book co-authored by Antionette and Peter Panepento.
When done right, Facebook advertising can be one of the best paid media options available to businesses of all sizes today. Facebook advertising is a marketing tactic every marketer is talking about it, but very few actually know how to drive real business results. Unfortunately there are far too many “experts” preaching and teaching how to get rich and famous overnight using Facebook marketing.
I imagine many of you are beyond busy working on your year-end appeal, but if you think you can take a deep breath and relax once the letters have gone out, you can’t. Your appeal is only the first step. In fact, what comes next is even more important, especially if you want to to keep your donors for a long time. Do a good job of thanking your donors.
Speaker: Tim Sarrantonio, Director of Corporate Brand
Do you really know your donors? Your nonprofit’s website and email campaigns are the foundation of your online brand and choosing the right domain for your website and email campaigns is critical to your organization’s online success. The top three domains for the social good sector are.org,ngo, and.ong.org is the most trusted domain on the Internet and open to all while.ngo and.ong are new domains that require legal verification to register and use.

On the show, Megan, Racquel and I discuss: Racquel Russell, Zillow Group.
Philanthropy tends to be fairly transactional — I give you some money, you send me a year-end appeal — and less relational — I give you some money, you ask me about my life story and connection to your mission. This could be (and most likely is) a contributing factor to dismal donor retention rates. The post Three Steps to Build Meaningful Relationships in Life (and with Your Donors) appeared first on Fundraising Report Card.
Pictured: Me reading these stupid pitches… Whether you are writing a social media update, crafting an appeal letter, or trying to get a journalist to mention your story, you must: Know. Your. Audience. This also goes for asking someone to publish or link to your content. Since I am responsible for our blog, I get hit up daily with requests to publish an author’s work or link to their content.
Payroll compliance is a cornerstone of business success, yet for small and midsize businesses, it’s becoming increasingly challenging to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of federal, state, and local regulations. Mistakes can lead to costly penalties and operational disruptions, making it essential to adopt advanced solutions that ensure accuracy and efficiency.
Cyber Monday, Black Friday and online holiday ecommerce sales.… either you are ready or you’re not! Many business and marketing leaders miss out on tapping into the power of the online shopping holidays and events to increase sales, brand awareness and most importantly connect with their audience. Too many times they think it's just for the big online and offline retailers.
Over the past twenty years, I have worked with hundreds of non-profit organizations. In my experience, the majority of non-profits (and the vast majority of small and mid-sized organizations) are frustrated with fundraising. Most non-profits feel overwhelmed with fund development. They have high turnover for fundraising staff, are trying to do too many things, and never feel like they are able to raise the money they need to thrive.
The rise of social media has also given rise to online giving on cause awareness and giving days. The urgency of a campaign occurring on a certain day inspires individuals to donate, but only if your nonprofit prepares in advance and creates an online campaign that taps into the impulsivity of cause awareness and giving day donors. To help your nonprofit prepare and launch a successful cause awareness day and/or giving day online campaign, this webinar was presented on November 14 to more than o
Today on CauseTalk Radio , Megan and I talking to Karen Davis , Senior Vice President of Global Philanthropy and Social Impact at Hasbro , about Be Fearless Be Kind, a philanthropic initiative, which is designed to empower kids to have the compassion and courage to stand up for others and make a difference. To help nurture empathy and compassion, parents and adults can access proven tools and resources through the Be Fearless Be Kind online hub.
Employee recognition has often been deemed a "feel-good" initiative, tied closely to rewards. While we understand its importance, we tend to associate recognition with intangible outcomes like engagement and sentiment, rather than direct impacts on retention and high performance. In today’s workplace, the true ROI of recognition lies in its ability to regenerate tangible, business-driven results.
Grant writing is a time-consuming process. It can also be nerve-wracking if you’re inexperienced or working on a particularly important grant. Jeff Kutash, the executive director of the Peter Kiewit Foundation in Omaha, Neb, deals with grants on a daily basis. What does the head of a foundation that gave $18 million in grant money last year have to say about grant writing and the relationship between foundations and nonprofit professionals?
Back off, Old Man. It ain’t your time yet. How annoying is it that department stores skip over Thanksgiving and go right to Christmas? As soon as Halloween ends (and sometimes before), you see decorations for sale, toys being stocked, and Christmas music playing…poor Thanksgiving doesn’t stand a chance. I get it. After all, Christmas time is make-or-break for retailers and, boy, are they ready to get your money.
Hiring a social media marketing agency is a big decision. Same goes for a digital marketing or branding agency. Understanding how to partner with your agency can make or break your success in both the short and long term. Unfortunately many business and marketing leaders think they can quickly hire a social media agency to generate some fast buzz and a viral video.
I've just getting back from the Nonprofit Storytelling Conference so it’s likely no surprise stories are on my mind. At the conference this year, I noticed talk about 2 types of nonprofit stories. I heard talk about "institutional stories" and "donor stories.". Institutional stories are just that – about the institution. These are necessary and good.
Managing HR tasks like payroll, compliance, and employee data can overwhelm small businesses. That’s where a Human Capital Management (HCM) solution comes in. Our eBook, Why Every Small Business Needs an HCM Solution: A Comprehensive Guide , shows how an HCM system automates tedious processes, ensuring your business stays compliant and efficient. You’ll learn how to simplify payroll, eliminate costly errors, and empower your employees with self-service tools.
According to PayPal Holiday Research 2017 , 63% of consumers are more likely to shop from a store that will donate a percentage of their proceeds to a cause. #GiftsforGood is a hashtag campaign meant to help consumers find holiday gifts that benefit good causes: Nonprofits Use #GiftsforGood on social media to promote your holiday gift programs. Consumers Browse #GiftsforGood and purchase gifts for friends and family members.
Yesterday I raised the question of why did it seem so difficult to get a second gift from a donor. Is it difficult? The stats from The Fundraising Effectiveness Project say the overall retention rate has declined every year since 2013 and looks likely to do so again in 2017. New donor retention is only 17.6%. So we seem to have trouble getting over 80% of first time donors to our nonprofits to make a second gift … to stick around.
Face-to-face interaction is an important aspect of any organization, especially when it comes to fundraising. If your donors come from all over the world, that interaction isn’t always possible. That’s where donor trips come in. Donor trips are a different take on the “major event” fundraising concept. It’s when your nonprofit takes a “tour” of the places where its money is coming from and you get to personally thank those that are helping you live out your mission.
For many nonprofits, media relations isn’t a high priority. This is especially true for smaller nonprofits that have limited resources for communications. But even if you’re small, it’s important to have a strategy for telling your story through the media and for responding to questions and queries from reporters. If your organization does not have a media relations strategy, the end of the year is a good time to create one.
