We talk a lot about storytelling in the nonprofit sector: how stories build through their first, second, and third acts and how all story arcs need beginnings, middles, and ends. When I do storytelling training, I compare the stories that nonprofits tell to a TV series. You have the short-lived, episodic stories that start and end all in one hour, each week.
Today on CauseTalk Radio , Megan I talk to Hil Davis , founder of BeautyKind , an online retailer where consumers can shop prestige beauty brands while raising funds for charitable causes. Launched In November 2014, BeautyKind is an online beauty retailer with charitable giving at its core. Customers can shop their favorite beauty, hair, fragrance and skin care brands, while directing five percent of every purchase to causes of their choice, whether that is a local cause or a national organizati

Communicating by email is a mixed blessing. It’s fast, easy, relatively inexpensive, and almost everyone has an email address. You can quickly get a message out to a lot of people. But here’s the problem. People get hundreds of emails a day and don’t have much time to weed through them. How can you stand out and make sure people read your email message?
Your financial statements hold powerful insights—but are you truly paying attention? Join David Worrell, accomplished CFO, finance expert, and author, for an engaging, nontraditional take on reading financial statements.
It’s true that social media is in transition. Facebook Reach is at an all time low. Instagram has a new algorithm. Twitter is in flux. And the next Big Thing in social media Snapchat is baffling to many seasoned social media managers. But digital and mobile app payments are coming. The global internet population is set to triple in the next four years.
Just as Canadians were responding in heroic ways to the Alberta fires — including digging deep in their pockets — a most unhelpful and self-appointed nonprofit watchdog named Charity Intelligence took to the public airways in a manner certain to confuse donors. With the devastation at Fort McMurray and the horrific plight of nearly 90,000 Canadians, both the federal government in Ottawa and the provincial government of Alberta moved with lightning speed to encourage immediate donatio
Our team is working on the creation of a new guide on nonprofit storybanking and photobanking. You get great stories and photos, but how do you organize them? How do you find what you need months later? How do you give the right people access? When does the content “expire” and should it be deleted? What about content curated from other sources – can that go in your bank?

Today on CauseTalk Radio , Megan and I talk to Ryder Kessler , CEO of DipJar , a donation box for credit cards that is a major improvement on the traditional coin-fed canister. Supporters can "dip" to leave a one-step donation with any credit or debit card. You can also review DipJar activity in real time on your smartphone, and change the preset dollar amount whenever you want.

The spring appeal season is underway and I’ve been barraged with appeals for the last couple of weeks. For many organizations, this is their main fundraising drive of the year. Unfortunately, some of these organizations need a refresher course in appeal writing. Whether you’re planning a spring campaign or one later in the year, here are a few things to keep in mind.
By the year 2020, over 26 billion things — cars, appliances, roads — will be connected to the internet. Known as the Internet of Things , our digital and philanthropic lives are about to transform. In the coming years the social good sector will launch #IoT apps that will empower real-time giving while watching TV or listening to radio through your refrigerator.
Traditional budgeting and forecasting methods can no longer keep pace with today’s rapidly evolving business environment. Static budgets, rigid annual forecasts, and outdated financial models limit an organization’s ability to adapt to market shifts and economic uncertainty. To stay ahead, finance leaders must leverage a future-forward approach—one that leverages real-time data, predictive analytics, and continuous planning to drive smarter financial decisions.
We’re rushing this to you over the weekend so you’re prepared and ready to act first thing Monday morning. For the sake of your organization, your clients, and your colleagues on Twitter, LinkedIn Facebook or reading your blog, we urge you to move quickly and forward this Alert to them immediately so they can also take action. ACTION ITEM: A dangerous and overreaching Bill (Assembly Bill 2855) is working its way through the California legislature.
Yesterday, May 3, was Give Local America Day. In many of the 50+ communities that participated, today — May 4 — is now also Give Local America Day. That’s because Kimbia’s giving platform crashed for most of yesterday, so they had to extend the campaign into today. Kimbia is going to have hell to pay on this one, but I’ll leave the skewering to others.
15 percent of the purchase price of the Balls of Steels Whiskey Chillers support testicular cancer cure research. Purchase-triggered donations (or percentage of sales fundraisers) is a long name for a simple cause marketing promotion. When shoppers buy a product or service from a business a portion or percentage of the sale is donated to a good cause.
It’s not news that social networks such as Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn are moving to a pay to play model. The glory days of being able to gain massive organic reach with a simple, on the fly Facebook post are over and done. Results in the social world of today require more planning, integration, and money. Marketing leaders today must understand and embrace the know, like, trust and pay model for growing their business.

It can be tempting to jump on the latest craze and try something new. But that bright shiny object may not be the answer you’re looking for. In fact, you can be more successful in your fundraising and communications if you use methods that have been around for awhile. Here’s how. Give your donors the personal touch. We have lots of different ways to communicate with donors, many of them electronic.

As part of our series on the Minute Message Model, we recently shared an easy way to write your organization’s One Minute Message. That’s our term for the pitch you should use any time you are introducing your organization in person, print, or digital communications. If things go well, your One Minute Message will be […].
Your charity needs more than a fancy gathering to attract reporters. It needs a news hook. Nonprofits spend countless hours — and considerable money — to stage gala dinners, peer-to-peer fundraising campaigns, and other events that aim to draw attention to their work and rally their supporters to give to their organizations. Quite often, they also expect these events to generate media coverage.
Payroll compliance is a cornerstone of business success, yet for small and midsize businesses, it’s becoming increasingly challenging to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of federal, state, and local regulations. Mistakes can lead to costly penalties and operational disruptions, making it essential to adopt advanced solutions that ensure accuracy and efficiency.

Mobile giving is one of the hottest topics in town. That being said, many people have been throwing the term around without fully understanding its practices or implications. It’s more than just texting to give. And that’s precisely why we’ve crafted this essential guide to mobile giving. We’ll explore everything from the definition of mobile fundraising to its inherent benefits and beyond.
I unwrapped the package from Simone Joyoux and out fell a card bearing this moving quotation from Constance Baker Motley, the first black woman in the U.S. to become a federal judge: “Something which we think is impossible now is not impossible in another decade.”. Inside the package was a remarkable gift of a book — a book I want to tell you about.
People give to people. It’s not such a bold, innovating statement—but it’s one we often forget. As fundraisers, it’s a statement that should be engrained in our heads. You’re probably thinking, “Of course people give to people.” In the literal sense, sure; but what we’re talking about goes much deeper. Karla Williams , ACFRE, explained the concept further at the AFP Mid-America Conference on Fundraising last week.
Employee recognition has often been deemed a "feel-good" initiative, tied closely to rewards. While we understand its importance, we tend to associate recognition with intangible outcomes like engagement and sentiment, rather than direct impacts on retention and high performance. In today’s workplace, the true ROI of recognition lies in its ability to regenerate tangible, business-driven results.
We really need to thank our lucky stars for Dr. Russell James! He painstakingly reviewed 20+ years worth of data from a federally funded, national, longitudinal study conducted by the National Institute on Aging. Why? Because it included giving behavior of people in the U.S. several years before they added a charitable gift component and after. What he found was the following: The average annual gift among those studied increased by 75% ($3,171) after making a planned gift.
Is podcasting making a big comeback? It seems like every year, I read an article saying Yes. Despite all the interest in more visual content, there’s something very compelling about rich audio content that doesn’t require you to stare directly at it or to hold it in your hands. Pop in some earbuds or use a Bluetooth speaker and multi-task away.
Today on CauseTalk Radio , Megan and I talk to Linn Jordan , Director of Retail Marketing for Walgreens , about its efforts on behalf of Red Nose Day. This UK import is dedicated to raising money to help children who are most in need, both in the U.S. and in some of the poorest communities in the world. Walgreens has sold more than 12 million Red Noses and raised $18 million since kicking off their campaign on March 28th - twice the amount sold during the entirety of the campaign last year!

Tom and I had a productive last week with our series of posts on ‘what’ or ‘who’ is at fault when it comes to the issue of holding on to and enhancing — or destroying — the value of donors. Tom tossed the first piece of tinder on the fire with his post Who’s Fibbing and Are We Getting Roasted indicating that no one really knows why we’re doing so miserably.
If ethics were cut and dry, there wouldn’t be dilemmas; we wouldn’t have to use our moral compasses. Unfortunately, life is a little more complicated than that. In the nonprofit sector, there are various ethical and moral dilemmas that could creep in and bog down your straight path to doing more good. At the AFP Mid-America Conference on Fundraising, Robbe Healey spoke to seven ethical dilemmas nonprofits will face.
Wealthy people are not necessarily philanthropists. But philanthropists are usually wealthy. When organizations develop their lists, I think, perhaps, a little too much attention is paid to capacity while not enough attention is paid to uncovering a supporter’s philanthropic mindset and whether or not the organization’s strategic objectives align with their personal mission.
