'You probably have a fundraising plan and maybe a donor relations plan, but it’s also important to have a thank you plan since you should spend just as much time thanking your donors as you do raising money. This isn’t happening. Nonprofit organizations spend a lot of time on their fundraising campaigns, but treat thanking donors as an afterthought.
Family foundations bring passion, good will and, of course, money to their philanthropy. Another asset they can bring to their efforts is the art of online conversation. Social media takes down the barriers between people and institutions. Anyone can be online, anywhere, and in conversation in real-time about causes and issues. (click title to read more).
There is a lot of discussion in the nonprofit sector about Millennials (a.k.a. Gen Y) and Baby Boomers and a growing interest in Gen Z a.k.a. #Philanthrokids , but almost no analysis of Generation X (aged 35-50 years). As the first generation to donate online and the generation that pioneered web design, email, blogging, and online advocacy, ignoring Gen X is a big mistake.

'Just over a week ago, I saw this tweet from a self-proclaimed "social media expert": #Google is requesting all websites are mobile friendly by April. Use #socialmedia instead and avoid the expense of #websiteredesign. This is horrible advice. The worst ever. At first, I was embarrassed for this guy. He probably means well. Google is upgrading its search algorithm on April 21 and is using mobile friendliness as a factor. ( Click here for more on Google’s Mobile-Friendly Algorithm Update. ).
Some time back I blogged about LinkedIn's (then new) Board Connect Service as a great new resource for nonprofit organizations. In the couple of years since, LinkedIn has built upon and expanded their vision of "LinkedIn for Good" and their offerings to nonprofits. I have taken part in a couple of free nonprofit technology trainings provided by LinkedIn and have enjoyed meeting their enthusiastic and caring team.

'You may be wondering how is middle school relevant to your donor communication when most of your donors are old enough to be parents or grandparents of middle school students? And who wants to go back to those awkward years, anyway? But keeping middle school students in mind can help you improve your donor communication. Here’s how. Write at a sixth to eighth grade level.
'Fundraising is in for a bleak future. More bleak than at any time in the past 40+ years. And there’s little evidence fundraisers have the capacity to implement plainly needed changes. This happy piece of insight is delivered in a new, important and thought-provoking series by veteran U.K. fundraiser Ken Burnett. It began running this week. You can get an overview of the treat that’s in store for you in the series’ Introduction.
'Over the last six months Nonprofit Tech for Good has bookmarked over 50 fundraising tools to prepare for this blog post. When the time came to write the post, at least 25% of the fundraising tools had shut down. It is very difficult to launch a fundraising service that is sustainable i.e., can earn enough revenue to pay staff, keep the lights on, and continually invest in innovation.
'I''m pleased to welcome Bill Tedesco, founder and CEO of DonorSearch , my favorite prospect research tool. Prospect research is so vitally important to successful nonprofit fundraising. But so misunderstood by nonprofit leaders. A veteran of prospect research, Bill shows you how researching your donors and prospects can move your fundraising forward.
Traditional budgeting and forecasting methods can no longer keep pace with today’s rapidly evolving business environment. Static budgets, rigid annual forecasts, and outdated financial models limit an organization’s ability to adapt to market shifts and economic uncertainty. To stay ahead, finance leaders must leverage a future-forward approach—one that leverages real-time data, predictive analytics, and continuous planning to drive smarter financial decisions.
'Yeehaw! Another Friday, another great round up to finish out the week. If you are a nonprofit communicator, odds are you are fighting the Curse of Knowledge in your organization in some way, most likely because your program experts and long-time staff have it. How Knowledge Can Be a Curse. The “Curse of Knowledge” is when you know so much about a topic that you lose the ability to see the issue from the perspective of those who are less informed.
This may or may not be a busy time for your organization. Some organizations do fundraising appeals or hold events in the spring. Others don’t. Either way, you should make spring relationship building season. Of course, relationship building needs to be a year-round effort. Donor relations is an important, but often overlooked, component of fundraising.
'On April 1 st Jeff Brooks alerted us to the next game-changer in fundraising with his glorious post, The Wah Generation. On April 2 nd Tom weighed in with a post titled Haunting Fundraising Questions , wondering about the future. His post was liberally salted with points by Pamela Barden zeroing in some key questions we all should be asking, but also pointing out that there are some pretty stupid paths being explored on the path to the future.

How can our orgs communicate effectively in the middle of two huge crises — 1) police brutality and misconduct in Baltimore, spurring active response by community members fighting for their rights and lives; and 2) Nepal’s crushing earthquake, and the millions whose lives will be impacted for years to come? This is an extremely delicate challenge, whether the crisis is human-driven (as in the Baltimore police actions) or a natural disaster.
'We all know that mobile technology is changing the way we communicate, work, and give. It was only a matter of time before the popularity of emojis, those cute little icons you see in text messages and social media updates, made their way onto the fundraising scene. Now, entire appeals are being written just with emojis! Talk about the art of brevity!
'I’ve been writing here a lot about hashtags lately….with good reason. The more I use them, and see the fantastic ways nonprofits use them, the more I’m convinced hashtags are must-have in the nonprofit marketer’s toolkit. In the past few months I’ve given several webinars on how to use hashtags to promote your cause. A few tactics, techniques and tools stood out.
Payroll compliance is a cornerstone of business success, yet for small and midsize businesses, it’s becoming increasingly challenging to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of federal, state, and local regulations. Mistakes can lead to costly penalties and operational disruptions, making it essential to adopt advanced solutions that ensure accuracy and efficiency.
'Guest post by Lori Finch. Giving days have become more popular over the last few years. Give Local America is coming up on Tuesday, May 5 and GivingTuesday takes place on the first Tuesday of December. My concern with giving days is organizations tend to spend so much time on fundraising and not enough time thanking their donors and building relationships.
'61 cents. How do I know that? I’ve just read the superb M+R Benchmarks 2015 report, supported by the Nonprofit Technology Network (NTEN). M+R studied the online fundraising performance of 84 organisations across the spectrum — environment, poverty, animal welfare, health, culture, international — to give the rest of us a treasury of data and insight.
I have always felt that the word “fundraiser” stinks! As a donor, I feel like “fundraiser” screams “salesperson” When a fundraiser calls me, I know I better hold on to my wallet and my checkbook. The staff titles nonprofits use are pretty stinky too. . Do you really think the average person feels comfortable when they read these titles below?
'Thanks to guest blogger Jen Boland, of Beaconfire. Today’s the day. If your website isn’t responsive or optimized for mobile devices, you should be worried. Because… As of today, Google has hugely increased mobile-friendliness as a key ranking signal in search results. Websites that are optimized for mobile devices will receive the highest SEO rankings.
Employee recognition has often been deemed a "feel-good" initiative, tied closely to rewards. While we understand its importance, we tend to associate recognition with intangible outcomes like engagement and sentiment, rather than direct impacts on retention and high performance. In today’s workplace, the true ROI of recognition lies in its ability to regenerate tangible, business-driven results.
'I hope you celebrated National Volunteer Week. Did you do something to make your volunteers feel special? I got a sweet card and gift in the mail from an organization I''ve been volunteering with for many years now. It really did make me feel appreciated. Even if you just send out a personal email to those who volunteer with your organization, I promise your volunteers will never forget it!
Wonder where we get numbers like a typical email open rate for nonprofit e-newsletters , or estimates of how much money you could be raising online? One of those sources is the M+R Benchmarks Study , and the new edition is now available. Here are a few highlights: Online revenue is up! Online revenue increased by 13 percent from 2013 to 2014 for the groups in the study, thanks to a 32% increase in monthly giving and 16.6% increase in web traffic.
'Spring is slowly inching its way into the Boston area. I hope it feels more like spring where you are. Many of you may take on spring cleaning projects in your home. Maybe you give your house a good cleaning and throw out a bunch of stuff you don’t need. Your nonprofit organization could probably use a good spring cleaning too. In my last post, I wrote about tackling your donor data.
'Last week I lamented the fact that so little seems to have been researched or written about regarding the ‘donor journey’ Whereas, in the commercial space, marketers can describe in excruciating detail how consumers proceed to consider and eventually purchase their products. If you google ‘customer journey’ you’ll be treated to 21 million results, replete with templates, mapping tools, case studies etc.

'We had a great tagline, and it served us well for over a decade. And then our tagline stopped working. How did we know? It just didn’t feel like us anymore. It wasn’t bad; it just wasn’t as good as it could be. It wasn’t as good as the Mission Minded of today. Consider our […].

'Happy Friday! Here’s what caught our eye in the world of fundraising and nonprofit marketing this week: National Volunteer Week is coming up! 'Charity: Water has done it again with a brilliant fundraising email posing as a newsletter (or newsletter posing as a fundraising email.). You can use this tactic too: Find three of your supporters and highlight what they are doing to support your cause. This not only promotes their individual fundraising campaigns, assuming they are actively raising money for you, but you’ll get several other important benefits too: It’s pure social proof.
