I combed through the Selfish Giving archives and came up with the best and worst local cause marketing programs of 2010. I took the unprecedented step of not including any of my own cause marketing programs. (I know, I’m as disappointed as you are.). Here are the seven best local cause marketing programs for 2010. Program: Create-a-Sweater Pinup Program.
The end of one year and the start of another is always a good time to reflect on what’s important, and what’s not. Sam Davidson has a new book out that will help you do this, while also making you laugh. It’s called 50 Things Your Life Doesn’t Need (Amazon). I especially loved the sections on “stuff from SkyMall&# and “anything belonging to an ex.&#.
Are the new Facebook Pages here? Well, yes… kinda, according to Mashable. It’s been one heck of a long, drawn out launch riddled with false starts and confusion, but it does seem that at last the new Pages are finally here. Well, kinda. The new Pages accidently went live yesterday for a few minutes before Facebook was ready, but just long enough to let the genie out of the bottle.
To produce this PSA? A few days ago I asked for advice on how to make a nonprofit sexy (since this is advice experts give us on marketing to Boomers). Maybe this isn’t a bad example from the American Jewish World Service! Tom.

This is the “holiday decoration” in the lobby of the Hippodrome located at 1120 Avenue of the Americas, owned by Edison Properties. Nice messaging: simple, inspiring and laudable. It just makes you feel good to read it - and it makes you want to do good yourself.
In all the years I’ve been doing cause marketing Finagle-A-Bagel is one my favorite partners. They don’t raise the most money. Not even close. They can’t boast the hippest programs. They raise most of their money through simple coin canisters at their registers. But the qualities they share with our best partners are irreplaceable: dedication and persistence.

Network for Good just released a new online giving study that provides all kinds of good ideas for increasing the amount of money you can raise online. ‘Tis the season for a gazillion email fundraising appeals. Here are five Email 101 pointers from direct response copywriter Ivan Levison, making some direct mail analogies: Mistake #1: Using a weak subject line. Mistake #2: Burying your Web address. Mistake #3: Failing to identify the reader’s pain quickly. Mistake #4: Keeping the email too short.
In the last post on goal setting , we looked at how to identify goals for all areas of your life. I firmly believe that if you did nothing more than write those goals down, you’ll be exponentially more effective at accomplishing them. But you can speed up the process by creating a road map for each goal you want to accomplish. One of the most common ways to teach the components of effective goal setting is using the acronym S.M.A.R.T.: Specific : Get really specific about what you want to
Traditional budgeting and forecasting methods can no longer keep pace with today’s rapidly evolving business environment. Static budgets, rigid annual forecasts, and outdated financial models limit an organization’s ability to adapt to market shifts and economic uncertainty. To stay ahead, finance leaders must leverage a future-forward approach—one that leverages real-time data, predictive analytics, and continuous planning to drive smarter financial decisions.
There’s a new book out with incredibly fascinating insights for all nonprofit marketing and fundraising folks. It’s called The Science of Giving , and it catalogs a range of seminal studies about giving psychology. The content is amazing, though it’s written in academic language, with sentences like: “Analyses of how empathic versus mood management feelings were related to donation decisions confirmed findings from Study 1.&# I’m afraid this dryness and its hefty co
Starting yesterday in Times Square Massachusetts-based SCVNGR teamed up with teen clothing retailer American Eagle on a New Year’s program aiming to raise money for Big Brothers Big Sisters. This location-based cause marketing program asks consumers to complete challenges on SCVNGR to raise cash for BBBS. Such challenges include “2010 was…” and players are asked to describe their year, “Spot the Eagle,” which asks them to snap a picture with the eagle on the Times Square billboard and “What’s yo
If you’ve been reading my blog for awhile, you’ll remember the “thank you&# note experiment I did in 2008 and 2009. More recently, Marta Lindsey’s experiment on keeping all of the nonprofit direct mail she received for a year was also a big hit. So, I started thinking, what if a bunch of us picked an experiment to try for 2011 and shared the results here on the blog over the course of the year?

The Ketchum agency and insurer Liberty Mutual have done a study on the “culture of giving,&# reported here by the Center for Media Research. The study looks broadly at giving — when people give, why, how they like to show their appreciation and so forth. It provides fascinating context for the more specific matter of charitable giving. And there are some specific findings on charitable giving attitudes.
Check out this very effective call to action. World Vision took a page out of Heifer International’s catalog and adapted it to a social media world. The text is just: Help save a child’s life with milk, cheese and more! Give a goat. Clicking on the image takes you to the goat option in the World Vision gift catalog. Short sweet. And if $75 is too much, they have $25, $30, and $100 options that just above the fold.
Do you think your organization has clout or Klout ? Is your organization considered a content curator? Are you a leader or a follower? Or are social media ranking tools an example of more kool-aid mix being added to the overflowing punch bowl? As more nonprofits get aggressive with their social media outreach, they are starting to take cues from the business sector about their own influence and finding “those influentials&# that they think are going to produce magical results. “Is it
Thanks to everyone who came out to the Social Media Breakfast – Boston today. It was great seeing everyone and talking about the intersection of social change with social media and mobile devices. As promised, I’ve included my slides above and below are links to some posts you might find useful. What is Cause Marketing? If you still have questions, this post should answer them.
Payroll compliance is a cornerstone of business success, yet for small and midsize businesses, it’s becoming increasingly challenging to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of federal, state, and local regulations. Mistakes can lead to costly penalties and operational disruptions, making it essential to adopt advanced solutions that ensure accuracy and efficiency.
I’ve just re-released my popular e-book on how to write a nonprofit annual report. If you are struggling with how to produce one, this guide will answer your questions. This new edition covers the five essentials of a good annual report, as well as what I consider to be the best “new and improved&# formats. For those of you looking for guidance on more traditional annual reports (longer printed pieces), you’ll find plenty of advice too.

The online giving experience has a significant impact on donor loyalty, retention, and gift levels.
Employee recognition has often been deemed a "feel-good" initiative, tied closely to rewards. While we understand its importance, we tend to associate recognition with intangible outcomes like engagement and sentiment, rather than direct impacts on retention and high performance. In today’s workplace, the true ROI of recognition lies in its ability to regenerate tangible, business-driven results.
Are you measuring the right social media metrics or do you have your head in the sand? Think about that for a minute or so. The answer matters. Oh, and don’t worry if you answered yes. I’ve done it. We all do at some point. As the web becomes more and more social you’ve probably noticed that it’s easy to get sucked into the black hole known as social engagement – using social media with no idea where you’re headed.
Before I get to my review of Breakthrough Nonprofit Branding (BNB) go now and learn more about the contest the authors are hosting for nonprofits. The deadline of December 10th is quickly approaching! To help put the book’s teachings into practice, the authors are launching a contest for nonprofits based in North America. To enter to win one of the top ten prizes, nonprofits must answer five short essay questions and submit sample creative that best represent their organization’s brand meaning.
I’ve decided to start blogging daily (or darn close) as of January 3, 2010. I’m giving it three months, and I’ll reevaluate then. I’ve been thinking about it for a few months, and when I saw this video, I stopped thinking and decided to do it. What This Means for You. For you, I hope this means even more opportunities to participate in your professional community through dialogue in the blog’s comments and other places the feed appears (e.g.
By the time I am done writing, there could easily be over 200 nonprofits mentioned in the book. Some are featured in case studies, others are simply listed as examples of excellence. A goal of mine is to make sure that nonprofits of all sizes and budgets from numerous program areas are featured. I am also putting in quotes from nonprofit social media practitioners that speak to key lessons learned and wisdom gained through experience.

Time magazine recently ran this interesting feature, The Rise of the Sheconomy. It’s about the growing clout of women in the marketplace. Women control more wealth, and more spending decisions, than ever before. Maybe that extends to giving to nonprofits. I say “maybe&# because I’m not sure what the most recent giving data says. Our last DonorTrends survey (2008) still showed men outgiving women on an annual basis ($939 to $592).
As I’ve said in earlier posts, studies show that more than 20% of donations are received today and tomorrow. How have you prepared for this? What are you doing over the next two days to make it ridiculously easy for donors to give? When I was running a development office: I always worked this week between Christmas and New Years; I made sure my online giving system was easy to navigate; and.
Care2 is pleased to provide this overview of The Online Giving Study: A Call to Reinvent Donor Relationships just released by Network for Good and True Sense Marketing. One of the best things I ever did to promote the cause marketing program at my nonprofit is start my blog Selfishgiving.com. It’s something you should do too. Besides, blogging is a great way to learn about cause marketing as you write about it. And thanks to Headway Themes it’s both easy and fun. When John Haydon rebuilt my blog earlier this year and told me he would be using a Headway Theme , I really didn’t know what to expect.
