Happy Friday! Here are some “ Mixed Links &# - my version of a Friday cocktail hour of refreshing stuff for nonprofit communicators. Using Social Media (and Looking Good While Doing It). First and foremost, I ask you to contribute to the Nonprofit Technology Network’s Scholarship Fund to get underfunded nonprofits to the Nonprofit Technology Conference in April.
I love Twitter. To help streamline my life, I use Twitter to update my Facebook profile status. Well earlier this week, I posted: RT @rdearborn #SROI @kanter proving she can explain complicated ROI theories and also conquer PPT templates with humorous photos. Three minutes later, one of my Facebook friends commented: I have to be honest I never understand these status updates.

Guess what? They’re assigning marketing homework in fifth grade. Yep. Here was my daughter Sophia’s assignment: to invent a fantasy sled and then write a paragraph to market it. In my unbiased opinion, it was the best piece of marketing I read all week. This is how she described her sled, which was shaped like a giant globe and had a trampoline, elevator, Egyptian desert, Eiffel Tower replica, kitchen and swimming pool among other features: Is the economy getting on your nerves?

Today I’m forwarding two quite different articles about online social networks — both have relevance to online fundraising. The first, from Center for Research , is your typical report on social network usage — who does it, what they do, etc. It’s actually a compilation of two other reports from Netpop Research and Insight Express.
One of the most important things to do in fundraising is make it easy for the donor. If you’ve listened to my fundraising training Creating Donor Evangelists , you’ll remember me saying that “hiding&# isn’t an effective fundraising strategy. Every communication from you should have an easy way for donors to connect with you. Websites and fundraising letters should have easy-to-find mailing addresses and phone numbers.
Direct Mail acquisition is one of the most expensive ways to raise money these days. When you factor in production, printing, and postage, a simple direct mail acquisition campaign runs about $20K to reach 50,000 people. Direct Mail typically generates a 0.5% to 1% response rate for acquisition, so that “payback&# (the point at which you recover what you invested in the direct mail campaign) is taking longer and longer to achieve.
Traditional budgeting and forecasting methods can no longer keep pace with today’s rapidly evolving business environment. Static budgets, rigid annual forecasts, and outdated financial models limit an organization’s ability to adapt to market shifts and economic uncertainty. To stay ahead, finance leaders must leverage a future-forward approach—one that leverages real-time data, predictive analytics, and continuous planning to drive smarter financial decisions.
Doing it right means thoughtful communications planning based on hard data and linked hand-in-hand with your organization's goals. But most of you don't do marketing planning, especially now when the changes are coming a mile a minute. What I hear back from nonprofit communicators is that there's no time, no money and so.no plan. But planning isn't a choice, it's a must ; without which you're driving blind and headed for a potentially-fatal crash.
Claire and I are hosting another live edition of Magic Keys Radio and Podcast tomorrow, Friday, February 20 at Noon Eastern (9:00 a.m. Pacific) - this time on fundraising auctions. I see a lot of articles these days advising how to use social media. Here’s one by Stephanie Miller of online marketing agency Return Path that I particularly like. Why? Because it draws interesting insights from successful email marketing, and those in turn reflect some fundamental principles of direct marketing. I’ve extracted the basic thoughts, but you’ll get more value if you check out the entire article … It’s not free — no social media program will succ
Last week, the Chronicle of Philanthropy pointed out a story from ThirdSector. In it, President Obama’s digital strategist, Thomas Gensemer, called email newsletters “a waste of time.&#. In the article he’s quoted as saying: “Email newsletters don’t get read, yet they take more effort to prepare than a 250-word email,&# he said. “Email is still a killer application, but only when used properly.&#. 250 words.

Do you really know your donors? Not just what they give, but who they are? 👥 In this interactive session, we’ll break down how nonprofits can use behavioral indicators (affinity, recency, frequency, and monetary value) to build prospecting segments that go beyond wealth screening and actually align with donor identity. Care2’s Dana Weissman had a great discussion on cause-related marketing with Rob Densen, founder of Tiller LLC , a leading advocacy marketing and communications consulting firm. Densen has developed innovative programs ranging from demystifying the language of Wall Street for AARP Financial to an alliance focused on minority financial empowerment that brings together the ING Foundation with Girls Inc.
Ode Magazine has published a list of “25 intelligent optimists” and my hero Seth Godin (3,000 posts!) was kind enough to name me as one. You can read the article here. But more importantly, read about the other inspiring folks here. (PS - in the article my story is portrayed a little out of order - if only my life were that linear or logical. CARE was one of my first jobs and the need that really got me was what I saw in Cambodia and Madagascar.
DC Jobs with Justice and the Institute for Policy Studies found a refreshing and attention-getting way to communicate on complicated issues in Economic Meltdown Funnies , a comic book about the recent economic crisis. The comic is indeed comic. But far beyond that, its format is a welcoming way in to a topic that's confusing and upsetting. It works.

Payroll compliance is a cornerstone of business success, yet for small and midsize businesses, it’s becoming increasingly challenging to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of federal, state, and local regulations. Mistakes can lead to costly penalties and operational disruptions, making it essential to adopt advanced solutions that ensure accuracy and efficiency.
New ads for Shure , the microphone maker, feature various artists — like Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey of The Who — professing their steadfast loyalty to the brand. Says Daltrey: "These mics are the only ones I’ll use." Do you have stories of commitment from your most loyal donors? Have you asked for them? Don’t you think you might find a use for them?!
In a salute to Ground Hog Day, I’m reposting Fundraising Secret #11: Don’t Be A Ned. Enjoy! Fundraising Secret #11: Don’t be a Ned. Click on the image to watch the clip. Does this sound like your fundraising efforts? Ned: Phil? Phil Connors? Phil Connors, I thought that was you! Phil: Hi, thanks for watching. [Starts to walk away].
When nonprofit organizations build websites they spend loads of time and money on the design, the functionality and bells and whistles that are cool and fun to work on. But, in reality, as important as those things are, they aren’t what tend to make great non-profit websites. It’s about the content and how it’s written—and sadly it’s usually the piece of a website that gets the least amount of attention.
People are conformists. They do what they think other people are doing. This is the basis of social norms theory and plenty of effective marketing. What does this mean to you if you’re marketing greener behavior? Don’t tell people to save the planet. Show them what their neighbors are doing if you want them to think about their behavior.
Employee recognition has often been deemed a "feel-good" initiative, tied closely to rewards. While we understand its importance, we tend to associate recognition with intangible outcomes like engagement and sentiment, rather than direct impacts on retention and high performance. In today’s workplace, the true ROI of recognition lies in its ability to regenerate tangible, business-driven results.
As the nonprofit landscape gets increasingly complex, money is tighter than ever and your org is discussed on infinite communications channels, it's more important than ever to brand your organization, programs and campaigns. When you do so – conveying credibility and value in a way that's easy to remember and repeat – you'll build long-lasting relationships with donors, volunteers, members, the media, clients, and more.
Last week I gave a short talk at a statewide conference for the United Way. If I had to pick one slide that summed up my talk, it would be this one: As Claire Meyerhoff, who was also on the panel, put it, you can spend a whole day writing a press release and trying to get a reporter to use it, and get nothing. Or you can spend that time creating your own content, using it in several different places, and having it work for you for months to come.
One of the savviest online marketers around, B.L. Ochman, takes aim in this article at six social media myths that you — and maybe your boss — ought to avoid … 1. Social media is cheap, if not free. 2. Anyone can do it. 3. You can make a big splash in a short time. 4. You can do it all in-house. 5. If you do something great, people will find it. 6.

This week, I flew on Virgin America. It was UNBELIEVABLE. A cool, space age-looking interior. A power plug for your laptop under your seat, in economy. Internet access on board. Your own TV on the seat with live television and loads of movies. Hungry? You just tap on the seatback screen and order whatever you want, whenever you want. The flight attendant brings it right to your seat.

By Guest Blogger and Fundraising Expert. Gail Perry. Would you rather be invited to a fundraising event or the best party in town? Clearly this is a no-brainer! Too many nonprofit organizations are shooting themselves in the foot because they treat their social gatherings as events, not parties. And this shows up in their marketing and promotions for their events, as well as during the occasion itself.
