A while ago I saw this Facebook post by Mark Horvath, founder of Invisible People , a unique digital storytelling organization that uses video and social media to fight homelessness and poverty: Since we are big fans of repurposing here at Nonprofit Marketing Guide, I asked Mark to share his process with our community. ~Kivi. Guest Video/Post by Mark Horvath, founder of Invisible People.

On the show, Megan, Chris and I discuss: Chris Noble, Matchfire Co. How Matchfire brings four different agencies together (StudioGood, Kompolt, Patron & Matchfire) that were once "Brand Soup.
Year-end appeal season is about to start. In some cases it already has. Many nonprofits rely on their fall fundraising campaign to raise a good chunk of revenue. It’s never easy to raise money. It’s it even tougher when you’re competing with scores of other organizations for your donors’ attention, although many of these appeal letters are mediocre at best, as Fundraising Consultant Mary Calahane pointed out in a recent post Warning: bad mail coming to a box near you.
Instagram recently announced a new feature called Instagram Stories that looks, smells, feels and behaves a LOT like SnapChat! The new Stories features empowers users to share their favorite moments in 10 second increments. of video and photos into a story that gets compiled and stored right within their Instagram profile. Viewers of the profile not only see the stories of the people and brands they follow at the top of their Instagram app, but they can also easily view the story when clicking o
Your financial statements hold powerful insights—but are you truly paying attention? Many finance professionals focus on the income statement while overlooking key signals hidden in the balance sheet and cash flow statement. Understanding these numbers can unlock smarter decision-making, uncover risks, and drive long-term success. Join David Worrell, accomplished CFO, finance expert, and author, for an engaging, nontraditional take on reading financial statements.
I’m glad Tom raised the issue of ‘lapsed’ donors in his post, When To Give Up On A Donor. The issue of seemingly inactive or financially unproductive donors receives to little serious attention. In the direct response part of the trade, ‘lapsed’ donors are too often mechanistically shoved into various RFM buckets with little understanding of their true potential and almost total ignorance of why they got there in the first place.
The following is an excerpt from Mobile for Good: A How-To Fundraising Guide for Nonprofits. Nonprofit new media managers often battle mobile and social media burnout. The mental energy required to actively engage multiple communities simultaneously is exhausting. Plugged in from early morning to late afternoon and early evening, many new media managers struggle to find balance at the end of day when they need to shift their mental focus to personal and family responsibilities.

Today on CauseTalk Radio , Megan Strand and I talk to Bill Spae , CEO of Vasari LLC , a Dairy Queen franchisee with 76+ locations in Texas, New Mexico and Oklahoma. Vasari is the second largest franchisee in the DQ system! Vasari leads several cause marketing programs, including a fundraiser for Share Our Strength that has raised $335,000 since 2014.
I’ve written a lot about the importance of nonprofit organizations communicating with their donors, but that’s not enough. You have to do it well. You have to knock it out of the park. Sadly, many organizations fail at this. Their communication is okay at best and just dreadful at worst. That’s why I was pleasantly surprised when I received an update in the mail from Heifer International, an organization that brings sustainable farming and commerce to poor areas around the world.
As a trained salary negotiation facilitator, I’ve presented facts, resources and strategies to many individuals across the globe to help them enter into and walking away successfully from negotiation conversations. Today, I want to provide a tool specifically for professionals who want to remain with their current organization but know in their hearts and minds that they deserve a raise or recognition for the work and results they contribute.
We’ve covered a lot of serious territory these past couple of weeks. So, on this summer Friday I’d prefer to wrap it up with a smile and a laugh. Thanks to another ‘goodie’ shoved into my mailbox by Pam Grow and relying on the wisdom of Quincy Jones, musician, humanitarian and all-around genius … why not be serious while laughing: “a big laugh is really a loud noise from the soul saying,’ Ain’t that the truth.’ “ Have a great weekend.
Traditional budgeting and forecasting methods can no longer keep pace with today’s rapidly evolving business environment. Static budgets, rigid annual forecasts, and outdated financial models limit an organization’s ability to adapt to market shifts and economic uncertainty. To stay ahead, finance leaders must leverage a future-forward approach—one that leverages real-time data, predictive analytics, and continuous planning to drive smarter financial decisions.
You’ve come a long way since you first realized your organization needed a rebrand. At first, you thought strategically about your brand and values. Then you embarked on changing your name to something that reflects them. You involved your colleagues, stakeholders, and board members appropriately. Heck, you even invited some of them to your brainstorming […].
Just about every day, I talk to a nonprofit staff person who thinks she is alone with the challenge or drama or weird situation she is in at work. And 95% of the time, I assure her I’ve heard it before. If you feel isolated with what you think must be special dysfunctions of your nonprofit alone, you need to connect with others online. My current favorite nonprofit Facebook Group is Nonprofit Happy Hour , which is an offshoot of Nonprofit with Balls.
Today on CauseTalk Radio , Megan and I talk to Chris Fuller , Executive Director at the Arby's Foundation , about the chain's first PurposeFULL report highlighting progress across its corporate social responsibility (CSR) platform. With 3,300 locations around the world, Arby's is the second largest quick-service chain in the world! On the show, Megan, Chris and I discuss: Chris Fuller, Arby's Foundation.
If you’re stuck trying to figure out a special way to show appreciation to your donors, how about having an open house at your organization? If you can’t hold one on site, have it at a restaurant or other venue. You may be able to find someone to donate space. Invite other supporters, too. You could just have an event for donors, but why not invite other supporters such as event attendees, email subscribers, and social media followers, as well?
Speaker: Tim Sarrantonio, Director of Corporate Brand
Do you really know your donors? Not just what they give, but who they are? 👥 In this interactive session, we’ll break down how nonprofits can use behavioral indicators (affinity, recency, frequency, and monetary value) to build prospecting segments that go beyond wealth screening and actually align with donor identity. You’ll walk away with practical strategies to move beyond basic demographics and cultivate supporters based on how they already engage with you!
I've been fundraising since before Facebook. Even before Google existed ! I've seen a lot of fads, tricks, and solid strategies in my time. Two of the most persistent seem to be bake sales and crowdfunding. (Seriously, a startling number of well meaning supporters still consider holding a bake sale to be a solid nonprofit fundraising strategy!) Back in the day, crowdfunding was putting change in a jar.
On a hot August afternoon 46 years ago I dropped my first direct mail campaign at the main post office in Washington, D.C. The 250,000 envelopes contained a six-page letter that began “ Everybody’s organized but the people… ” announcing the formation of a new “citizens lobby” called Common Cause. It was a big gamble. Few organizations had ever gone to the people themselves seeking small contributions to reform the political system.
Persuading people is never easy, but it can be a game-changing skill in the nonprofit world. You might think that persuasion is a trait you’re born with or just pure luck — and you aren’t alone — but Dr. Robert Cialdini disagrees. He sees it as a science and says it’s something everybody can get better at. You just have to know how. . As I talked about in a previous article , Dr.
Are you actually “there” when you are on vacation? Or are you back at the office? Here’s a little twist on our “Day in the Life” of nonprofit communicators series. See if anything about this first day of vacation for a nonprofit communicator sounds familiar… Before 8:00 a.m. – I wake up at 6 am thinking “Oh no! I am gonna be late for work.” I reach for my phone to check my email, then realize my phone isn’t by my bed.
Payroll compliance is a cornerstone of business success, yet for small and midsize businesses, it’s becoming increasingly challenging to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of federal, state, and local regulations. Mistakes can lead to costly penalties and operational disruptions, making it essential to adopt advanced solutions that ensure accuracy and efficiency.
Today on CauseTalk Radio , Megan and I talk to Lisa Lewis , Director of Marketing at Formation Data Systems (FDS) , a startup storage company, about an interesting cause marketing partnership with Oxfam involving giving goats to families in need! On the show, Megan, Lisa and I discuss: How FDS was looking for a marketing program that was affordable but impactful when Lisa discovered Oxfam after a friend gave her a goat as a gift!
It’s hard to believe it’s almost the end of August and year-end fundraising is just round the corner. One thing you need to do before you switch from going to the beach to apple picking is to make sure your website is up to par. This means it’s up-to-date, easy to read and navigate, welcoming, and audience-centered. How does your website fare? Use the checklist below to find out.
These days you can’t be average. Average efforts deliver average results. If you want to raise more major gifts and generate planned gifts: Be exceptional. Be innovative. Deliver more value than is expected of you. Use new media channels. Deliver content that is entertaining and provides value. Make your donors (or, in this case… 4th grade students) feel good.
In The Hidden Cost of Complexity I noted that given a choice, the harder something is to use, the less people will use it. The more difficult something is to read, the fewer people will read it. Our sector spends millions and millions on making things more complex and only a tiny amount understanding how these things are used. If ever there were a trade where the producer is disconnected from the consumer, ours certainly ranks near the top.
Employee recognition has often been deemed a "feel-good" initiative, tied closely to rewards. While we understand its importance, we tend to associate recognition with intangible outcomes like engagement and sentiment, rather than direct impacts on retention and high performance. In today’s workplace, the true ROI of recognition lies in its ability to regenerate tangible, business-driven results.
Published in English , French , and Spanish , the goal of the 2016 Global NGO Online Technology Survey is to gain a better understanding of how nonprofits, NGOs, and charities worldwide use online technology. The data will be released on January 30, 2017 in the second annual edition of the Global NGO Online Technology Report. The survey will be live through October 31 and your participation and promotion of the survey is greatly appreciated.
As of August 2016, Twitter has 313 million monthly active users. If you or your nonprofit are one of them, explore these little known Twitter features that might make the social network more useful for you and your followers. 1) Night Mode. Twitter unveiled a fresh new mobile feature for Android and iOS this month called Night Mode. To make tweeting easier on your eyes at night, Night Mode reverses the color scheme so that the background is black and the text is white.

Today on CauseTalk Radio , Megan and I talk to Katrina McGhee , a nonprofit leader and entrepreneur who has more than 25 years of experience in progressive leadership roles, including chief marketing officer for Susan G. Komen for the Cure. On the show, Megan, Katrina and I discuss personal branding for causepreneurs.
Like most nonprofits, you’re going to spend a lot of time, attention, and money on fundraising to reap the rewards of a giving season that’s expected to see more than $30 billion in donations. And, like most organizations, I’m guessing you don’t have a lot of extra time or money. Not a problem. With a little planning and careful consideration, you’ll be well positioned to see a better return on investment from your fundraising efforts.
Managing HR tasks like payroll, compliance, and employee data can overwhelm small businesses. That’s where a Human Capital Management (HCM) solution comes in. Our eBook, Why Every Small Business Needs an HCM Solution: A Comprehensive Guide , shows how an HCM system automates tedious processes, ensuring your business stays compliant and efficient. You’ll learn how to simplify payroll, eliminate costly errors, and empower your employees with self-service tools.
Pokemon Go is a shiny object. A time waster for a fundraiser seeking serious results. It focuses on the lowest rung of the ladder. DO NOT chase it! Instead, redirect the time you might invest in Pokemon Go and, instead, “go” see half a dozen very important major donors, “go” visit your wealthiest legacy society members, and “go” reshuffle your Major Gift Officers’ caseloads to optimize them for results.
Somewhere out there on a beach, in a forest or on some mountain trail there’s a CFO, CEO or new VP for Development making mental notes on the agenda for the fall Board Meeting. And you can bet one of her/his suggestions will be to put out a Request for Proposal (RFP) in hopes of improving income, or paying homage to some capricious notion that “we ought to bid out this consulting work more often” Heaven only knows what thoughts lurk in the minds of vacationing nonprofit execs.
Does your nonprofit rely one type of fundraising to bring in revenue or is it diversified? For example, a diverse fundraising program would include direct mail, telemarketing, foundation grants, online fundraising through email appeals, your website, social media, etc. Crowdfunding and Giving Days can be helpful too. In fact, we just shared 12 Giving Day tips you should know.
So you had an email that tanked. Or an email fundraising campaign that’s limping along. Or you just want to give an extra boost near a advocacy deadline. Should you resend email to non-openers? Sometimes. Image source: https://flic.kr/p/fnTjdR. Technically speaking, a resend is sending the exact same message to the nonopeners of the original email.
