Animals rule the Facebook nonprofit kingdom

A new study from M+R and NTEN finds the Facebook pages of wildlife and animal welfare organizations saw the most growth last year of any nonprofit organization type – up 129% in 2011. Overall fan page growth of nonprofit Facebook pages was also massive – with nonprofits on average having 70% more Facebook fans by the end of 2011 than the beginning. What’s interesting is we’ve seen the same thing at Network for Good - animal organizations are stars at social fundraising.

Results. This, according to a study written up in the Chronicle of Philanthropy yesterday. The Cygnus Donor Survey found in a survey of 15,000 donors that just crying need won’t do it in 2012. Fundraisers need to “do something wonderful” that will carry a message to donors that the charity is fulfilling its mission, says the study’s author, Penelope Burk.

He’s warning against hyperventilating over a recent report, Millenial Impact Report , based on the survey research that Jeff loves to hate (as opposed to hard data), that enthuses over giving by the age 20-35 set. He estimates that for most nonprofits, less than 5% of donors are under age 35.
