Beth Ann Spiegel. “Marketing” is still considered a dirty word by some and misunderstood by many in the nonprofit world despite how important it is to furthering your good cause. Beth Ann Spiegel shares some tips on how to get your colleagues on board. ~Kivi. Guest Post by Beth Ann Spiegel, Fund Development and Communications Associate of The Arc of Atlantic County.
My Return on Investment (ROI) from using Pinterest to promote Nonprofit Organizations is somewhere between minimal and better-than-expected, but using the site on a regular basis has fundamentally changed how I think about social media and the people who use it. In the same way that Twitter forced me to rethink online messaging in 2008 and onward, Pinterest has made it abundantly clear that expecting our online supporters and donors to read even only 140-characters can sometimes be too much to a
That’s the mantra recommended by social media strategist and blogger Ephraim Gopin in his recent Fundraising Success article, Attention! Social Media Does Not Equal Fundraising! Says Gopin: “If you’re going into social media thinking dollars and cents, get out now. If you go in looking to engage, interact and build up a community of people who are interested in your mission/brand, then down the road you have a better chance of successfully running a fundraising campaign.”
Your financial statements hold powerful insights—but are you truly paying attention? The 2012 Millennial Impact Report - a survey of more than 6,500 people ages 20 to 35 - shows 75% of millennials donate (in small amounts), 70% have fundraised for their favorite causes and most give for reasons that span generations—they have a relationship with the cause. The survey, which was conducted by Achieve and Johnson, Grossnickle, and Associates, yielded these additional results and implications: 1.
As someone who loves to incorporate the Internet into my fundraising events, I have found many useful online resources for fundraising teams. One of these resources is a free fundraising website platform. There’s actually many of them available online if you know where to look. I’ve tried a few of them, and found some to be better than others. The following are seven of my favorite free fundraising websites. #1: GoFundMe.com.

I’ve been working on ways to explain how a nonprofit’s content marketing strategy is different from all the same old nonprofit communications you may have been publishing all along. So I made this chart yesterday. I posted it to Facebook last night and based on the positive reaction there, I hope you’ll like it too. I also shared it in my weekly e-newsletter this morning.
If there is one thing that nonprofit social media managers are learning (or should be learning) from utilizing new media it’s that technology is now constantly in flux. As soon as you learn and become comfortable with a tool set, it’s replaced with a new one. The best social media managers will adapt quickly, embrace a state of constant learning, and not allow themselves to become easily agitated by modern nonprofit technology.
For many of us, June is the end of the fiscal year. Most donors could care less. But that doesn’t mean we can slack off! A deadline is a great motivator. So even if it is a deadline that makes no sense to donors (donors think in terms of the tax year), it can still motivate a gift. Here are some steps I shared last week with my Fundraising Kick subscribers that will help you get on the phone and ask for money!
A new study from M+R and NTEN finds the Facebook pages of wildlife and animal welfare organizations saw the most growth last year of any nonprofit organization type – up 129% in 2011. Overall fan page growth of nonprofit Facebook pages was also massive – with nonprofits on average having 70% more Facebook fans by the end of 2011 than the beginning. What’s interesting is we’ve seen the same thing at Network for Good - animal organizations are stars at social fundraising.
Traditional budgeting and forecasting methods can no longer keep pace with today’s rapidly evolving business environment. Static budgets, rigid annual forecasts, and outdated financial models limit an organization’s ability to adapt to market shifts and economic uncertainty. To stay ahead, finance leaders must leverage a future-forward approach—one that leverages real-time data, predictive analytics, and continuous planning to drive smarter financial decisions.
I’ve always found fundraising events to be a good time. I meet hundreds of people, and really get to use my fundraising skills to collect money for a good cause. One of the most important things I always remind myself of, though, is that it’s not all about having fun; there’s a lot of work involved. Your fundraising event could create a foundation for many successful fundraisers in the future.
There’s a great new book out for cause and corporate marketers: Good Works! Marketing and Corporate Initiatives that Build a Better World…and the Bottom Line. It’s authored by Philip Kotler, David Hessekiel and Nancy Lee. I don’t know Philip and Nancy, but I know a lot about David. David has been a friend and mentor of mine for many years.
What are your favorite ways to report back to your donors on the good work that has been accomplished thanks to their generosity? I’m doing a free webinar at CharityHowTo this afternoon at 3 pm ET on this topic. Here are 14 of my favorite suggestions — add yours in the comments. If you have a good example to share that illustrates any of these, I would love to hear about that too!

Do you really know your donors? Back in 2000, I used email to raise $100,000 in six weeks. I wrote about it in “The $100,000 Guide to Email Solicitation.” (You can buy it in the Fundraising Coach Store but I give it away free to everyone who signs up for my free email newsletter.). People tell me they find the “ten tactical tips,” the actual examples of email, and the overall strategy helpful.
Results. This, according to a study written up in the Chronicle of Philanthropy yesterday. The Cygnus Donor Survey found in a survey of 15,000 donors that just crying need won’t do it in 2012. Fundraisers need to “do something wonderful” that will carry a message to donors that the charity is fulfilling its mission, says the study’s author, Penelope Burk.
Jeff Brooks at Future Fundraising Now just wrote a post, Don’t get too excited by survey on Millennial giving. He’s warning against hyperventilating over a recent report, Millenial Impact Report , based on the survey research that Jeff loves to hate (as opposed to hard data), that enthuses over giving by the age 20-35 set. He estimates that for most nonprofits, less than 5% of donors are under age 35.

Payroll compliance is a cornerstone of business success, yet for small and midsize businesses, it’s becoming increasingly challenging to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of federal, state, and local regulations. Mistakes can lead to costly penalties and operational disruptions, making it essential to adopt advanced solutions that ensure accuracy and efficiency.
Robin Dixon of the Firelight Foundation. I’ve written before about the concept of newsjacking – or getting your organization and its point of view included in the updated versions of news stories, often hours or days after they first break. You have to be fast on your feet to newsjack. What’s easier to do is to prepare your response to a big story that you know is coming up.
There’s a sixth upgrade I want to add to the recent blog post Five Recent Upgrades That Nonprofits Need to Know About – you can now request to change the name of your nonprofit’s Facebook Page by visiting: Edit Page > Update Info > Basic Information > Name > Request Change: Until recently, you could only change your Page name if your Page had 200 fans or less through a do-it-yourself method in the Admin Panel, but now their is an official process for Pages with 201 f

I’m at the Cause Marketing Forum and one of the more interesting sessions was The Perfect Pitch. Three marketers and cause advocates were asked to pitch a cause ( Citizen Schools ) to a potential corporate partner on why they should care - and take a meeting about a cause marketing campaign. Here are the three factors that made for a winning pitch. 1.
Employee recognition has often been deemed a "feel-good" initiative, tied closely to rewards. While we understand its importance, we tend to associate recognition with intangible outcomes like engagement and sentiment, rather than direct impacts on retention and high performance. In today’s workplace, the true ROI of recognition lies in its ability to regenerate tangible, business-driven results.
Generally on Fridays, Tom and I like to send you into the day with gentle thoughts – not to spoil your weekend. But, this Friday we urge you to do some weekend thinking and worrying. Worry about whether your organization is truly ‘donor-centric’ or whether, and how much, you’re abusing your donors. How do you know if you’re not meeting the donor-centric test?

I managed to stay awake long enough last night to catch the Colbert Report, where Stephen talked about a very interesting marketing concept: a curated Twitter account with a rotating voice each week. Some Swedish tourism groups are giving it a try with @sweden. Here’s how they describe the project: They’ve apparently had quite a diverse group of characters in the mix, leading to some less than politically correct tweets — which is how they ended up on the Colbert Report, nat

When people think of fundraising, they often think of a large organization hosting a huge event. However, you don’t need lots of volunteers to successfully raise funds. Following are 10 simple fundraiser ideas for small groups. Bake Sale – A bake sale is one of the easiest fundraiser ideas for small groups to pull off. Have each member make a couple of different treats and then host your sale at an event with lots of foot traffic, like a school open house. 50/50 Raffle – You only need one person
Are you chasing an idea, donor or initiative with great determination? Fantastic – unless it’s time to abandon the hunt. This past weekend, I was reading a piece by Tony Schwartz that shared four questions to ask yourself when you’re wondering whether your persistence is wise. It was especially important for me to read his thoughts, because I definitely err toward fanatic determination.
‘HENRY’ stands for Higher Earning, Not Rich Yet. These are folks earning $100-$250k, although this includes a lot of two-income households. I used to be one; however, now I’m neither higher earning nor rich … nor likely to be. Disqualified. But I digress. This article, The Return of the Newly Affluent , describes some of the characteristics of HENRYs, a group in the sweet spot for many charities and nonprofits.
