Heading into the new year, Stefanie Mathew , Vice President of Corporate Partnerships at the National Park Foundation (NPF) , knew the nonprofit had a strong wind at its back. NPF was coming off the 2016 centennial celebration of the founding of the National Park Service and there was plenty of business interest in preserving national parks and programs and connecting people to them.
Image via Bloomerang. Monthly or recurring giving is a great way to raise more money and give you a constant stream of revenue throughout the year. More nonprofits are taking advantage of this. According to CauseVox, 54% of donors give through a sustainer (recurring) program, with 82% giving monthly. Plus, monthly giving will raise your retention rate.
Measuring the effectiveness of your nonprofit’s communications is a complicated puzzle. You have the effectiveness of specific channels like your website or Facebook page. Those depend on the effectiveness of the content you create. That depends on the effectiveness of your editorial calendar. That in turn depends on your larger marketing strategy, which depends on your organizational goals.
One of the most overlooked aspects of social business and social media is the power of the personal brand. Unfortunately, many marketers and business leaders wrongly assume that personal branding is only for those looking to be “famous” or become some type of online or social marketing “guru.” This couldn’t be further from the truth. Think about this… When was the last time you handed your credit card to a logo?
Your financial statements hold powerful insights—but are you truly paying attention? Many finance professionals focus on the income statement while overlooking key signals hidden in the balance sheet and cash flow statement. Understanding these numbers can unlock smarter decision-making, uncover risks, and drive long-term success. Join David Worrell, accomplished CFO, finance expert, and author, for an engaging, nontraditional take on reading financial statements.
Now entering its sixth year, #GivingTuesday is a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media. To tap this potential, your NGO, nonprofit, or charity needs to activate its social media presence before, during, and after #GivingTuesday to help build the movement and, in the process, raise awareness and funds for your organization and mission.
I've been seeing a disturbing trend of late: a sharp rise in what I call are BFFs: blunt force fundraisers. Nonprofit leaders willfully skipping planning to jump straight to asking. As the author of Ask Without Fear!® , you know I am an advocate for asking. But the number of BFF's I'm seeing of late - both nationally and internationally - is weird.

September is here and you know that means. Yes, it’s year-end appeal season – the time many nonprofits rely on to raise a good chunk of their revenue. While your donors will be receiving a multitude of appeal letters, many organizations seem to go on autopilot and send a generic, boring appeal. You can make yours stand out by giving some thought to it.
Lisa Northrop. Welcome to the latest installment in our series on the “Day in the Life” of nonprofit communicators, where we ask you to describe your day in your own words. We’d love to feature YOU in this series! Don’t be shy – tell us what you do in a typical day as a nonprofit communications pro. Volunteering since she was a Brownie in Girl Scouts, Lisa always knew she would work in the non-profit sector.
There you sit in the executive conference room watching everyone nod their heads about the latest idea from the new executive on the block. He or she has a new idea that is going to “save the company.” It could be anything from a random Facebook campaign, Live Video, Series of Instagram Stories, new Facebook group, LinkedIn group, social media campaign, planned “go viral” video” or a years worth of random inspirational quotes to bump up the engagement to your Facebo
Rapid population growth and migration is dramatically changing societies and ecosystems worldwide and as this future unfolds nonprofits, NGOs, and charities will play a central role in safeguarding the world’s most vulnerable communities, the land upon which they live, and the wildlife that surrounds them. As the social conscience of globalization, the nonprofit sector needs to contemplate future challenges and adjust their programs accordingly – and to inspire the next generation to tackl
Traditional budgeting and forecasting methods can no longer keep pace with today’s rapidly evolving business environment. Static budgets, rigid annual forecasts, and outdated financial models limit an organization’s ability to adapt to market shifts and economic uncertainty. To stay ahead, finance leaders must leverage a future-forward approach—one that leverages real-time data, predictive analytics, and continuous planning to drive smarter financial decisions.
Even though Tom persuaded me to give up working with cave art and stone tablets when we ‘modernized’ the Agitator offices, we’ve never lost interest in the power and importance of storytelling. It’s just that we now have paper and digital bits and bytes for the all-important fundraising task of tale-telling. Over the years we’ve honored the importance of storytelling in various posts — Top 10 Secrets of Successful Storytelling … Storytelling vs.
Today on CauseTalk Radio Megan and I talk to Ann Krcik , Senior Director of Outdoor Exploration for The North Face , and Adrian Benepe , Senior Vice President for The Trust For Public Land (TPL) , about Walls Are Meant For Climbing , a campaign that aims to spark conversation about building trust and community around - and beyond - climbing walls. The partnership also includes a one million dollar donation to TPL!
Many of you may be working on your year-end appeal, which is great, but have you given any thought to how you’ll thank your donors? Thanking your donors after an appeal (and throughout the year) is equally important, yet many organizations leave this as a last minute to-do item and it shows. You can stand out by taking the time to give your donors a great thank you experience.
For my September NPMG Tweet Like a Boss webinar, I connected with Glenn E. Martin , President and Founder of JustLeadershipUSA , about how he personally uses Twitter to advance his organization’s mission. Do you really know your donors? Not just what they give, but who they are? 👥 In this interactive session, we’ll break down how nonprofits can use behavioral indicators (affinity, recency, frequency, and monetary value) to build prospecting segments that go beyond wealth screening and actually align with donor identity. You’ll walk away with practical strategies to move beyond basic demographics and cultivate supporters based on how they already engage with you!
Do you need to worry about your personal brand as a working professional? Or is a personal brand only for those “online gurus” trying to get rich and famous? The truth is this… You have a brand regardless if you plan it or not. Your brand is made of perceptions. You can sit in a room and create, ideate, and develop your brand for the next year to 10 years.
It’s not official, but it’s obvious that Facebook is ramping up promotion of its native “Donate” buttons and Fundraisers in its News Feed. Even before Facebook helped raise $10 million dollars for the Center for Disaster Philanthropy for Hurricane Harvey relief, Facebook “Donate” buttons and fundraisers created by Facebook users were popping up in the feed with increased frequency.
Despite opposable thumbs and ‘highly developed’ brains we humans are far simpler than most folks want to believe. So, unfortunately, most of us tend to make things more complicated than necessary. Especially some fundraisers. In his post, Easy is better than hard Nick Ellinger of DonorVoice points out the importance of making human brains ‘happy’ And, it’s ‘easy things’ that make brains happy.
Today on CauseTalk Radio , Megan and I talk to James Frison , Director, Community Relations for Lowe's , about Renovation Across the Nation , an annual $2.5 million initiative where Lowe’s gives a $50,000 grant and hands-on support from employee volunteers to one Boys & Girls Club in each of the 50 states to refurbish the facility. This year, customers joined in on the effort by donating at Lowe’s store nationwide.
Payroll compliance is a cornerstone of business success, yet for small and midsize businesses, it’s becoming increasingly challenging to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of federal, state, and local regulations. Mistakes can lead to costly penalties and operational disruptions, making it essential to adopt advanced solutions that ensure accuracy and efficiency.
Volunteers are a vital part of your nonprofit organization. They’re the ones doing the grunt work and producing tangible change for the cause you’re working to better. Once you’ve recruited a solid group of volunteers and have boots on the ground to make things happen, you need to develop relationships with them in order to treat them as an extension of your staff.
Let’s get down to the real nitty gritty! Are you chugging coffee all day? Do you hate your donor management system? Do you have the best co-workers? Tell me all about it! It’s my monthly call for submissions for our Day in the Life of a Nonprofit Communicator blog series, and I want you to share all the things you do on a daily basis to make the world a better place.
It's time to get real about the real return on the investment you make in content marketing. Is the money and time you are investing in content marketing helping you achieve your business goals? Is the time you invest researching your audience, learning the social networks and pounding out mounds of content fruitful? Bottom line… does your content convert to real business?
Social media changes so frequently that unless your NGO has a full-time social media manager who has the time to consistently research and adopt emerging trends, odds are your NGO is using social media in ways that are no longer effective. The webinar content below was presented by Heather Mansfield on September 19, 2017 to 1,175 nonprofit staff. It was the final presentation of the social media excellence webinar.
Employee recognition has often been deemed a "feel-good" initiative, tied closely to rewards. While we understand its importance, we tend to associate recognition with intangible outcomes like engagement and sentiment, rather than direct impacts on retention and high performance. In today’s workplace, the true ROI of recognition lies in its ability to regenerate tangible, business-driven results.
In 2005 the devastation from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita triggered $6.5 billion in donations and pledges from individual citizens, foundations, and corporations, according to the 2007 Giving USA report, an annual snapshot of American philanthropy. Contributions hit $1 billion in three weeks, outpacing the charitable response to the September 11 th attacks and the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.
Hurricane Harvey was a one-in-a-thousand-year rain event dumping nearly 25 trillion gallons of rainwater on the gulf coast. Most of the affected people were Texans, hearty and independent folk whose pride in their state leads them to take care of their own at a time like this. It is not surprising then to see how many Texas businesses have jumped at the chance to help support the many hurricane victims and evacuees: H-E-B grocery chain is giving customers the opportunity to donate by adding $1,
Did you ever hear the proverb the early bird gets the worm ? When I was a kid, I was very, very literal. I decided that if the early bird got the worm, I had no desire to be that bird! From that came my habit of sleeping in. But now I know better and can apply this lesson to something as far afield as grantwriting. The idea is simple but it has a lot more to do with success than a quick glance might suggest.
Scheduling a meeting shouldn’t be hard. But all too often, it feels like: via GIPHY. The back-and-forth is enough to suck your soul dry. Thankfully, there are apps to improve the process. I’ve used a few of these myself, and recently asked fellow nonprofit professionals which apps they use to book appointments, office hours and team meetings. This is their short list.

Another day of amazing content creation. You create yet another epic piece of content. You publish yet another epic piece of content. Your epic piece of content is shared all over the social and digital web, once again. However, as usual your content is not converting. It is not driving business. It is not driving real traffic to your blog or website.
Presented on September 20 via webinar, the slides below highlight data from the 2017 Global NGO Technology Report , the 2017 Global Trends in Giving Report , and Network for Good’s donor platform to determine if U.S. nonprofits are using technology in the ways that their donors and supporters prefer. With Hurricane Harvey barely in the rearview mirror and with Hurricane Irma churning through Florida, I’m sure every fundraiser who uses the U.S. Postal Service is wondering, “Should I mail or not mail?” To The Agitator , with its roots in direct mail, this is both a donor-centric question and an organization-centric one. If you mail a massive acquisition campaign right now that includes Southeast Texas, Louisiana and Florida zip codes, you’ll appear insensitive if not downright mendacious
