Congratulations, you’ve got new email subscribers! Now what? Dump them in your normal communications stream without recognition or welcome? Nope! Welcome them – quickly, warmly, sincerely. The welcome email may be the single most important email you send. Welcome emails confirm permission and set expectations with the subscriber. Welcome emails are four times more likely to be opened, and five times more likely to get click-throughs.
When many entrepreneurs, small business owners and even experienced marketers in larger organizations think of the term “brand” they think of pretty colors, expensive logos, fancy graphics, Facebook cover photos, Pinterest boards and traditional tv or radio advertisements. Smart marketers know branding is much more than a logo. In reality, the logo is the easy part and only one small yet very important component of your brand.
It’s summer, yea! Those of us who live in colder climates relish these few months of warmer weather, a slower pace, and a vacation to someplace fun. While I hope you get a chance to slow down and take a vacation this summer, that doesn’t mean everything in your organization has to come to a screeching halt. In fact, summer is a great time to tackle a few projects and get ready for a busy fall.

Summer. It stirs up thoughts trips, outdoor activities, and school break. A pause in the normal routines of life. Even though we're no longer in school, we still let that "summer mentality" affect us. Rest is good. But taking a break from fundraising in the summer can kill your fundraising. "We'll start in late August" Over the last few weeks, I've been hearing clients put off significant coaching and planning projects saying, "We'll start in late August or early September.
Last week I spoke at the annual Engage for Good Conference in Chicago on how nonprofits can dramatically increase their cause marketing success with content marketing. I built my presentation around this definition of what content marketing for cause marketing is: Creating consistent, interesting and useful content that builds a loyal audience. Over time, you can monetize this audience in a number of ways, including through win-win partnerships with companies (aka cause marketing).

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos set the nonprofit world ablaze earlier this month by tweeting a “request for ideas” about how to direct his charitable giving. Not surprisingly, Bezos’ unusual public request has drawn massive media coverage, in addition to more than 42,000 replies on Twitter. It also offers a great opportunity to talk about ‘ newsjacking ‘ — the public relations practice of using a hot item in the news to help generate media coverage for your organiz
Unfortunately many small business owners and marketing teams jump on social media expecting fast results. They are quickly disappointed when what they thought was a well thought out social media strategy, campaign or program fall flat on its face. Many social marketing plans fail simply because the marketing architect underestimated the amount of work required.
One of the most important things nonprofit organizations need to do is build relationships with their donors. Building relationships should be front and center in everything you do. Here are some ways you can incorporate building relationships in every aspect of your work. Appeal letters aren’t just about raising money. You may think the primary purpose of an appeal letter is to raise money, but building relationships is just as important.

Traditional budgeting and forecasting methods can no longer keep pace with today’s rapidly evolving business environment. Static budgets, rigid annual forecasts, and outdated financial models limit an organization’s ability to adapt to market shifts and economic uncertainty. To stay ahead, finance leaders must leverage a future-forward approach—one that leverages real-time data, predictive analytics, and continuous planning to drive smarter financial decisions.
Years ago, I wrote about Zig Ziglar teaching that nobody wants a drill. He said millions of drills are sold every year. But no one wants a drill. They want a hole. The same is true with donors. No donor wants to make a donation. Donors want the value the donation will make. So tell them about that. Tell them about the change their gift will make. (Or that their gift has made.

The long Fourth of July weekend is getting underway here in the U.S. as Americans head for beaches, barbeques, parades and fireworks to celebrate Independence Day. Agitator readers North of the border will mark Canada Day tomorrow and in two weeks our French readers will celebrate Bastille Day. Regardless of where we live it seems to me that this year we all should be devoting some quiet, thoughtful time to thinking about the increasingly complex, interwoven world we now find ourselves in.
Getting that perfect grant can be a make or break situation for a startup nonprofit. When Nonprofit Hub was at its beginning, we were lucky enough to receive a grant that helped us get our feet on solid ground. But that was because of a relationship I had built with the organization over several years’ time and they trusted me to do good with their money.
Before you can start to use the techniques below you need to figure out what engagement means for your nonprofit. So you think you know your audience? Do you know your ideal customer? You invest time and money each week creating content, posting social network updates, engaging with your community, updating and enhancing your digital and web properties. Only problem is that your business results are dismal at best. The return on investment in social media is simply not there.
Yesterday I explored ‘vanity metrics’ and briefly explained why they’re not very helpful for serious decision-making. Or how, in the case of Benchmarking, they’re often ignored or mis-applied. Today, we’ll move to metrics that truly matter. By my definition an important metric – a metric that matters – is one that triggers the “What-should-I-do-differently-to-improve?
Ah, slacktivism. The juxtaposition of two conflicting actions—being an activist and, well… slacking. You might be wondering what exactly it is and how it makes a difference in the world. Luckily, we’ve researched those questions so you don’t have to. What is slacktivism? The United Nations has defined slacktivism as when people “support a cause by performing simple measures” but “are not truly engaged or devoted to making a change.
Employee recognition has often been deemed a "feel-good" initiative, tied closely to rewards. While we understand its importance, we tend to associate recognition with intangible outcomes like engagement and sentiment, rather than direct impacts on retention and high performance. In today’s workplace, the true ROI of recognition lies in its ability to regenerate tangible, business-driven results.
List size. Open rates. Page views. Click-through rates. Dollars donated. These are often the key metrics a nonprofit uses to determine the success of their digital program. However, it’s not the most important one.

Just about every week, I talk to nonprofit communications directors who have “limiting beliefs” that are holding them back. Limiting beliefs are ideas or assumptions that you have about yourself, your situation, or others that limit your ability to succeed. But limiting beliefs are just that: beliefs. They are not indisputable facts, and they are often flat-out wrong.

No one buys a Chevy because GM needs the money. By the same token, donors don’t give because your organization has a need to balance its budget. Although many think otherwise, donor expectations aren’t usually driven by an organization’s brilliant programmatic details, the expertise of its staff, the number of regional offices or other versions of organization-centric stuff board and CEOs love to brag about.
I was having lunch with a friend recently, and she commented on the diversity of people who have been on Nonprofit Hub’s staff over the years. She then inquired about how we maintain such a strong cultural identity with such different, frequently changing staff members. The answer, to me at least, is simple: a strong organizational culture should bring people together—regardless of background or experience.
If you don’t know where you are going, you will never get there. Here’s how to start with the end in mind so you can be resolute in finding the best fitting job for you and your dreams. First, dream.
