Year-end fundraising season is upon us. This is the busiest time of the year for most organizations and you need to plan carefully. If you just send one fundraising letter and then wait for the donations to pour in, you’re in for a rude awakening. Your donors are busy and may put your letter aside to handle later, and then never get to it. You may be thinking of bypassing direct mail altogether because it’s too expensive, and only sending email appeals.
On Thursday, I’m presenting a webinar on how to create a great thank you video for your supporters. We’ll talk about the best scripts and soundtracks for these kinds of videos, but what about when you post them on social media and your supporters see it with the sound off? Here are a few tips for creating videos with sound that still work without sound. .

Real-time reporting from nonprofit conferences and events requires an advanced skill set, training, and a lot of practice. Tailored for social media managers, this webinar below was presented on October 9 highlighted which skills are necessary for live reporting, which online tools work the best, and outlined a 6-week plan that includes pre-event planning and post-event follow-up.
Over the past week, we renewed our exploration of what’s wrong with nonprofit fundraising. Here and here we dealt mainly with how fundraisers are viewed and treated by their organizations and by each other. Of course, that’s only a small part of the story — some of the symptoms. The bigger picture problem — the disease itself and the ‘cure’ for it lies in understanding and treating the systems that are the root cause of the disease.

The average person cares about worthy causes and enjoys giving to organizations that are making a different. But it can be hard to cut through the clutter and reach people with your fundraising message.

Do you have a brand story that you share with people who come in contact with your brand? A story that serves as the connective tissue and foundation representing the who, what and why your brand exists on this planet today? Your brand story should be the thread which connects your value proposition, team, vision, mission, and purpose with your customers, potential customers, audience, community and partners.
After you send your year-end appeal, you’ll most likely gain some brand new donors, which is good news. The bad news is over 70% of these first-time donors won’t make a second gift. Don’t let that happen to you. Nonprofit organizations don’t spend enough time trying to keep their current donors. You want to pay attention to your retention because it’s easier and less expensive to keep your current donors rather than finding new ones.
Aubrey Brennan. We love to hear how it goes when you’ve used one of our tactics! Today’s post comes from Aubrey Brennan of Green Bay Botanical Garden who took our suggestions regarding finding engaged email subscribers and deleting everyone else. Find out how it worked for her organization. ~Kristina. Guest Post by Aubrey Brennan. Thanks to Nonprofit Marketing Guide, we knew it was important to segment our email list to increase engagement.
According to the 2017 Global Trends in Giving Report , a donor’s ideology has more impact upon which causes and types of nonprofits they support than gender or age. Donors with a conservative ideology are more traditional in their giving while donors with a liberal ideology are more diverse in the types of causes they support. Giving to children and youth, however, is a cause that unites all donors regardless of ideology.
Traditional budgeting and forecasting methods can no longer keep pace with today’s rapidly evolving business environment. Static budgets, rigid annual forecasts, and outdated financial models limit an organization’s ability to adapt to market shifts and economic uncertainty. To stay ahead, finance leaders must leverage a future-forward approach—one that leverages real-time data, predictive analytics, and continuous planning to drive smarter financial decisions.
Though the idea of helping and giving back to others has existed since Biblical times, nonprofit organizations in the United States have a much shorter history. Every couple of decades, a new era ushers in a new set of ideas, principles and practices that affect how the nonprofit sector functions. Let’s take a look at what we can learn from the history of nonprofit organizations.

“I have so much extra time and money, I think I will spend it all on social media…” said no business or marketing leader ever! We work with solo entrepreneurs to Fortune 10 brands and I can tell you there is not one client who has ever stated this to us. Usually it's the opposite. Their schedules are already packed. They are stressed as they know they need to turn up their efforts with social media if they want to be in business 5 years from now.
Donor communication can be the key to growing your nonprofit’s community and reaching your fundraising goals. Be wary of these 5 fatal communication mistakes! By Steve Page. When your nonprofit’s fundraising efforts are in full swing, it can be easy to get caught up in a numbers game of trying to reach your fundraising benchmarks. Do you really know your donors? Not just what they give, but who they are? 👥 In this interactive session, we’ll break down how nonprofits can use behavioral indicators (affinity, recency, frequency, and monetary value) to build prospecting segments that go beyond wealth screening and actually align with donor identity. You’ll walk away with practical strategies to move beyond basic demographics and cultivate supporters based on how they already engage with you!
It’s my least favorite goal for nonprofit communicators: Brand Awareness. Why? Because it’s vague and hard to measure, and therefore hard to know what will really work best to increase it. Nevertheless, raising brand awareness is a top goal for many nonprofit communications departments, according to our research. The argument for the goal goes like this: If someone isn’t aware you exist, then how can they use your services, get educated on issues, advocate for your cause, vol
A reader’s comment to my post Storytelling In The Digital Age got me thinking about the things fundraisers say ‘Yes’ to and those that trigger a ‘No’ In this case, the reader commented, “Would like to get Julia’s book, but Amazon’s $38.73 price is out of my nonprofit range.” I’m sure Joe is sincere and his organization, like so many, may not even have a budget for books, and training sessions.
Sponsored by Jitasa. If you’ve ever held an executive position at a nonprofit, you have probably heard cliche mantras such as “work smart, not hard” or “do more with less.” While these snippets of advice surely have some merit, they don’t assist you in discovering how to work smart or how to do more. That’s where we come in. One of the most difficult components of starting and maintaining a nonprofit is learning how to take advantage of the resources at your disposal.
Today on CauseTalk Radio , Megan and I talk to Michal Alter , Co-Founder and CEO, Visit.org , about how this B-Corp is curating different local travel experiences — ranging from free to several thousand dollars per person — all in the name of social good! The traveler gets an authentic travel experience and 100% of host revenue is invested back into the local community.
Payroll compliance is a cornerstone of business success, yet for small and midsize businesses, it’s becoming increasingly challenging to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of federal, state, and local regulations. Mistakes can lead to costly penalties and operational disruptions, making it essential to adopt advanced solutions that ensure accuracy and efficiency.
Today's marketer has no guarantee of reaching their audience on any medium. Not Facebook. Not Instagram. Not LinkedIn. Not Twitter. Not YouTube. Not Snapchat. Organic reach is dwindling to zero for brands and marketers who don't have a solid marketing strategy that encompasses social, digital, content, and measurement all centered around their target audience.
By now you’ve all heard about GivingTuesday, the annual giving day that takes place the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. We’re saturated with information about participating. Perhaps you’ve participated in the past and it’s been successful or maybe it wasn’t. Perhaps you’re thinking about participating for the first time. My problem with GivingTuesday and any giving days, for that matter, is they focus too much on getting donations.

I want to give an enthusiastic ‘thumbs up’ to Richard Perry’s article recently in NonProfitPRO titled, What Rights Do Your Donors Have? The short answer would be … every right! But Richard was more thoughtful. Here’s his list of ‘donor rights’: To be treated as a partner. [Not a cash machine.]. To know how the funds they give are being used and that a real difference is being made.
Employee recognition has often been deemed a "feel-good" initiative, tied closely to rewards. While we understand its importance, we tend to associate recognition with intangible outcomes like engagement and sentiment, rather than direct impacts on retention and high performance. In today’s workplace, the true ROI of recognition lies in its ability to regenerate tangible, business-driven results.

It's not news that people buy from people or that business and life are about personal, human relationships. People have been buying from other people, communicating with other people and connecting with other people for years, decades and centuries. It's in our DNA to want to connect with other human beings who believe in the same things we do. It's these common foundations that weave the threads for relationships, trust and community.
First, what are we really talking about when we say moves management ? Wikipedia says , “moves are the actions an organization takes to bring in donors, establish relationships, and renew contributions.” So, moves are what the fundraiser does. Ah! Moves are activities. I get it! Fundraisers achieve their goals if they develop plans for their activities.

If you still believe—or even worse, tout the fact– that your organization is the end-all and be-all this will burst your organization-centric bubble. A study just released by The Blackbaud Institute titled Vital Signs: Monitoring Giving Patterns in the Donor Marketplace concludes that…. “…American donors are more valuable to American nonprofit organizations than the organizations are to the donors.”.
Sponsored by Give Lively. #GivingTuesday is approaching fast and we want nonprofits to be prepared. We know that many organizations are unable to take full advantage of the digital movement due to the high cost of online fundraising tech. This year, those numbers are expected to grow by double digits, and we don’t want organizations like yours to miss out.
