As a nonprofit management student, preparing to enter this field can be challenging because it’s still developing. The University of San Francisco was the first school to offer a Master’s in NonprofitAdministration less than 40 years ago, and the first School of Philanthropy was created just nine years ago at Indiana University.
But a nonprofit is not just a fundraising organization. In the donor-hero story, charity administrators are minions. The administrator’s role is only to dutifully obey donor orders. What works for this group is the administrator-hero story.[1] Culture conflict. This culture difference goes beyond profit.
Today’s public officials are most often trained in areas of administration, policy development, fiscal analysis, and in stewarding public resources and promoting public accountability. That means developing a shared understanding of what those problems are (or will be), how to tackle them, and what success looks like.
Work requirements are based on several problematic truths about the United States: an unwillingness to govern by fact rather than fiction, a deep history of racism and sexism, and a centuries-long capitalist work ethic that treats people as dispensable. That’s not career development. They are administratively efficient.
From 2000 to 2021, progress on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals has been anemic, registering less than 10 percent growth over 20 years. Nonprofit organizations, however, have been less involved in this moment of technological innovation.
