As a Black cisgendered woman, a first-generation college student from the deep South, and a person born in poverty, social justice movements have touched every aspect of my life. We can also use our perspective from complex identities to bring our lived experiences and show how communities are impacted differently.

RR: The book is based on your discovery that everyone’s “economic issues are also emotional ones.” Poverty, debt, and inequality are crucial to me. Typically, we say that the American Dream ideology individualizes and pathologizes poverty. This man has to ward off the specter of elder poverty by becoming a landlord.
